This 9–10mm white freshwater pearl necklace is my way of saying: some things are only beautiful because they took a long time.

For this real pearl necklace, I chose non-nucleated freshwater pearls only. That means there’s no bead inside — each pearl is almost entirely nacre, slowly built layer by layer over about 5–6 years. In today’s world of faster Edison-style farming, it has become rare to see pearls with this kind of naturally thick shell. On strands like this, the nacre can reach several millimetres, which is hard to imagine if you’re used to Japanese Akoya or South Sea pearls. It really is a different kind of freshwater pearl necklace: heavier in the hand, deeper in the glow.

When you wear it, you don’t see the “technical” side, of course — you just see a calm, bright line of 9–10mm pearls sitting at your collarbone. The light doesn’t feel thin or glassy; it has that soft, layered depth that only comes from time. This is the kind of pearl necklace I think of as a quiet investment: not loud, not trendy, but something you can keep for many years, knowing it was given the time it needed to become what it is.
